In this work the importance of patient-analyst interaction and the bi-personal field in interpretation and therapeutic change is highlighted. There can be no transformative interpretation without the valorisation of both these factors. There are many theoretical orientations that converge towards this progressive awareness and that can be clinically exploited. From their comparison, some fundamental commonalities emerge that can be better understood in the light of the findings of infant research. All this highlights how often interpretation is nothing more than a different positioning of the analyst in relation to the patient and vice versa; that is, a strategy to reach and put in contact with each other's Selves (both of the first and the second) and help to initiate a self-conscious process in the patient.
