When one crosses the threshold of a prison, the sense of continuity with the outside world is interrupted. Even a simple everyday object can take on a dangerous significance. For this reason, visitors are not free to enter and exit without being subjected to strict controls. In prison, one enters an all-encompassing dimension, governed by rigid rules—rules that are not open to interpretation or negotiation—including the expectation of greeting others with respect and politeness in the corridors.
