This article explores, through the encounter with the suffering of a man held in pre-trial detention, the complexity of both the manifest and latent dynamics that, on this side and beyond the walls, inhabit and shape the prison—a borderline place that draws toward borderline states those who can and those who cannot escape it. The author, drawing from his own experience in multidisciplinary work—a necessary condition in such complex and layered institutional settings—uses psychoanalytic tools as a probe for understanding and Michele Minolli’s meta-theory as a guarantee of attention to the human being.
