This essay summarizes the contributions of three recent reports presented to the European Commission by Enrico Letta, Mario Draghi and Enrico Giovannini: they offer a very detailed analysis and real guidelines for EU policies in the next five-year period 2024-2029. The overall message is that one of the main causes of the EU’s reduced growth compared to China and the United States is due to insufficient integration. The common goals in sectors such as energy, research, technological innovation and defense can only be achieved through a greater coordination between the industries of the different countries to ensure a dimension competitive at the international level and broadening the scope of the single market to include the financial sector. The high costs of the “national sovereignty” in terms of size of companies, poor technological innovation, high energy costs, insufficient investments in the defense sector could be eliminated if greater coordination in monetary and fiscal sectors were achieved, in a new federal structure characterized by the maintenance of the European welfare model.
