Carlo Zappia’s volume L’incertezza in economia (Carocci, 2024) provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance that the problem of uncertainty has had in the evolution of economics and, more generally, the social sciences, as well as on some recent developments in the latter. In the following pages, I will argue that the narrative presented by Zappia comprises multiple interconnected stories: the history of uncertainty theory within the conventional framework of expected utility, which is part of the broader history of the mathematization of economics; and the crisis of the standard model, which is encompassed within the credibility revolution in the social sciences.
