It has happened to many of us in recent years to encounter, in clinical practice and in educational settings, a population of adolescents who were factually and intellectually distancing themselves from the classic binary organization of gender that we were used to taking, we first, for granted, in the company of course of parents, teachers, educators, administrators, etc. This encounter had been anticipated to a certain extent by researchers who had pointed out the fragility of assumptions about gender but, perhaps because they were so ingrained in our personal identity even before our cultural identity, we had not worried too much about these critical issues.
