Reading the article by colleagues Claudia Zaccaria and Francesca Balestra brought to mind some recurring themes in clinical work with couples and families. The couple carries within it the history of two individuals who come from a family history with family styles and boundaries that can be many different from each other (the image of the matryoshka represents this complexity from my viewpoint). In clinical and research settings, the complexity of the couple and family system can be read and deciphered through the analysis of three dimensions: cohesion, flexibility, and communication, as explicated in Olson's circumflex model.
