This review article focuses on the concept of genealogy applied to the Italian diplomats from post-unification to the Republican time. Historian of International Relations Luciano Monzali’s recent book La diplomazia italiana dal Risorgimento alla Prima Repubblica (Mondadori Education, 2023) is examined on the base also of mainstream European reasearch on diplomatic corps and regime change. Single personalities of junior and senior diplomats in Italian history, especially in the Fascist period and in the post-WWII reconstruction are outlined thanks to Monzali’s inspiring archive-based research. The categories of generation and of “diplomatic style” are also considered as useful tools to approach the contribution of diplomats to the main political choices of their time.
