The essay aims to trace back the philosophical heritage and the influence of Epicurus’ philosophy in the Dei delitti e delle pene by Cesare Beccaria. In Beccaria’s work there are striking assonances with the Epicurean Ratae Sententiae and the Lucretian De Rerum Natura, which Beccaria possessed multiple copies. Even if not explicitly cited by Beccaria, the presence of Epicurean themes is noticeable in his description of the birth of the civil state, the covenant, the mechanisms of punishments and the formation of a social order starting from individual interests.
