Most urban studies deal with ‘cities’ without differentiating between mid-sized city and large cities or metropolises. Such differentiation however developed starting with the early 20th century, and produced two distinct types of urban settlement. There are many cultural contaminations between them, but also profound differences. In particular, the European mid-sized city shows some features of the Weberian ideal-type of ‘city’: elements of community (e.g. less impactful segregation and less crime) and a government closer to the citizens. Mid-sized cities must be the object of targeted policies meant to preserve their existence, since this is crucial, among other things, to the institutional biodiversity and harmonious development of the regions.
