Failed states are terrible places to live. They have the lowest levels of development as measured by literacy, child mortality, clean water, miles of paved road, and most other quality-of-life indicators. They suffer from ongoing economic stagnation1, central banks fail to control inflation, governments are unable to collect taxes, the police and military languish, and these nations tend to be highly-dependent upon foreign aid. The citizens of failed states are frequently harassed, or worse, by armed non-state and state actors.
